It’d probably be better to ask some Microsoft folks or the Microsoft support folks about this Microsoft product. (Asking Apple users in a semi-related forum for a completely different product just isn’t the best spot for assistance.)

When Microsoft office is being installed over Apple Remote Desktop, the recipient does not have any prompt to close application. Just in case you have never done it before, I have made a few screen captures, see the following (Tried uploading picture, got ' No Files InRequest ' error). Because the mechanism of mac application, pevious versions of Microsoft Remote Desktop cannot be archived in Mac App Store. And the Remote Desktop 10 has ended supporting El Capitan, it is still suggested to find a way to upgrade the macOS to 10.12 or higher.
I hadn’t heard about RD Gateway until you’ve mentioned it. (I’d probably use a VPN for that purpose, too.)
Based on a few searches, I see documentation of using this product with the RD gateway. If that’s what you’re using and if it’s not working, then I’d check with the folks in a Microsoft forum or with Microsoft support.

In all likelihood, there’s no network connection and no path available between the sites, or there’s a firewall or three that’s blocking that access. There’ll need to be either public static IP addresses for the target systems at the office and a path opened through the firewall, or private IP addresses and port-forwarding configured through the firewall, or a VPN configured and established between the remote client and the target network. Or IPv6 and a path through the firewall. There’ll probably want to be a public DNS name established for the target host, too.
